Using Keywords to Make the Most of Your Classified Ads

When you are creating your Classified Ad, an often overlooked component are the keywords.  The keywords you choose can be a critical factor when it comes to getting maximum exposure in the search engines.  

Your title should not only be used to capture the attention of the browsers at the classified ad site, you should also try to take full advantage of being indexed in the search engines. After all, if your listing makes it to the first page of the search engines, you’ll get tremendous exposure, more than just the people browsing the classified ad site, and with more exposure comes a better chance of selling your item.

To get on the first page of search engines with a classified ad can be tricky.  This is why you have to choose the words in your title and listing carefully.  When you do a search on a search engine, the words you use to find your results are called keywords.  All the results you see when you hit the search button have the keywords you searched for in them.

What you need to do when thinking about keywords for your classified ad, is to try and find keywords that are well searched, but don’t have a lot of competition.  The less competion there is for your keywords, the more likely you’ll show up on the first page of the search engines.

Now, let’s look at an example, so you can get a better understanding.  The first think you’ll need is a free keyword tool.  You can find one here:

We’ll say you have baby clothes for sale.  If you put the keywords baby clothes in the keyword tool, you’ll see that term has been searched for 29,000 times over the past 12 months.  That’s a lot of searches.  However,  you’ll have a hard time ranking for this term in the search engines.  If you do a search for “baby clothes” (use the quotes) in Google, you will see there are 2,070,000 results.

What we need to do is find keywords related to baby clothes that still get a lot of searches but not much competition.  So we look further down the list.  How about “baby clothes lot”  These keywords received 261 searches over the past 12 months.  That means approx 22 searches a day are done for baby clothes lot.  This isn’t a bad amount of daily searches at all. 

Next, we have to see what our competition is like.   In Google for “baby clothes lot” There are only 77 results.  That means only 77 sites have optimized specifically for that term.

If you have baby clothes and have quite a few of them, you should use something like the following title: Baby Clothes Lot-Used-Excellent Condition.  Always make sure your most important keywords are put in the title first.  Using the keywords in the title alone is not enough.  You need to mention the keywords throughout the listing.

You should phrase your listing like this:

Baby Clothes Lot-Used-Excellent Condition (Repeat the title in the first line of your listing)

We have a wonderful baby clothes lot for sale.  The baby clothes lot ranges in sizes from 0-3 months to 3-6 months.  Our little one is now 8 months old and we decided to sell the old ones as a baby clothes lot, to make space and get some extra money.

What we did, was optimize our listing for the search engines by mentioning the keywords throughout the listing.  Search engines crawl classified ad sites quite often, due to constantly updating content.  Now, when someone searches for baby clothes lot, our listing should make it to the first page.  When someone clicks on the result, it will bring them directly to your classified ad.

Remember,  our goal with this method is to not only draw attention to the listing from people who are already at the classified ad site, we are also trying to draw in traffic from people searching on a search engine.  When you can get on the first page of search engine results, you’ll get a lot more eyes to your listing, which will help better ensure you make a sale.


How Using Online Classified Ads and Print Ads Can Increase Your Chances for Selling Your Item(s)

When you have an item or items to sell, one of the most effective ways to sell it is through print advertising.  Most local newspapers don’t charge anything for listing an item so long as the item’s value is under $100.  There are other such publications as the PennySaver which also allow you to run free ads for you to sell your stuff.  While print ads are a fantastic way to sell your item or items there are some downfalls.

You really can’t give a detailed description in your print ad.  You are limited to a certain number of words f0r free ads.  If you are using a paid ad, the more words and lines your ad has, the more you will pay for your ad.  This presents a problem.  The more detailed your ad, the better chance you have of selling it.  However, the more detailed the ad, the more it will cost you.  Pictures are another downfall to print advertising.  Unless you buy a huge ad, which isn’t likely, you won’t be able to include a picture of your item.  As they say in the newspaper business “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Thanks to the internet and online classified sites like you can overcome these downfalls of print advertising and maximize your chances of selling your item.  You can list your item in the print media as you normally would, except now all you have to do is say: “More info @”  or you can even say “See pics @”  ( will bring them directly to The World For Sale.) Now, your potential buyers will be inlcined to come to The World For Sale and get more information and see pictures.  Your potential buyer will go to the category, or type a search in for the item you’re selling and find it.

The beauty is, you can write as much as you want in your item description.  You have a much better chance of selling your item by using this strategy.  You use the print media to garner interest.  You use The World For Sale to give an in-depth description and show pictures.  Best of all, all your contact information can also be put into your ad.  By using this method, you’ll probably more than double your chances of selling your item!

Increase Your Chances of Selling Your Item-Use a Sign

The House for Sale and House for Rent signs are especially useful.  They will allow your potential buyer/renter to get all the specific information about the house.  For example, they’ll know how many bedrooms, bathrooms, square feet, etc…
